The Quick “Inland Field” Setup (3 Steps)
If you are heading out to a UK field right now, you only need to follow these three basic steps to ensure a successful hunt:
- Select Field 1 (Multi-IQ): Press the Detect Mode button (the coil icon) to navigate to Field 1. This mode is specifically optimized for UK inland historical sites, balances depth perfectly, and automatically filters out frustrating “coke” (burnt coal byproduct) common to UK soil. Keep it on Multi frequency.
- Perform a Noise Cancel: Hold the detector steady, raise the coil a foot off the ground away from metal objects, go into the settings menu (cogwheel icon), select Noise Cancel, and hit the accept/reject button. This clears out local electromagnetic interference (EMI).
- Set Sensitivity & Volume: Set your overall volume to a healthy 25 so you can hear subtle changes. Raise your Sensitivity to around 20–24. If the machine starts “chattering” or sounding unstable over the grass, simply lower the sensitivity by a couple of clicks until it becomes quiet.
Pro-Tip for Beginners
Is the field pasture (grass) or freshly ploughed/rolled land?
Are you finding a lot of iron trash/nails, or is the ground relatively clean?
How and where do I change the sense sensitivity on the equinox 900
- Look at the Sensitivity Gauge on the left edge of the LCD screen (it looks like a vertical bar graph next to a small magnifying glass icon).
- Press the Plus (+) button to increase sensitivity.
- Press the Minus (-) button to decrease sensitivity.
- The Target: Aim for a sensitivity setting between 20 and 24 for UK inland fields.
- The Test: Hold the search coil completely still, about two inches above the grass. If the machine is making constant clicking, popping, or “chattering” noises, your sensitivity is too high for the ground conditions or local EMI (electromagnetic interference).
- The Fix: Simply tap the Minus (-) button a couple of times until the detector becomes completely quiet and stable. A stable machine running at a sensitivity of 21 will find far more depth and targets than a noisy, unstable machine running at 25.
My ground is ploughed/rolled land? Are you finding a lot of iron trash/nails
Switch to Field 2 (For heavy iron): If the iron trash is overwhelming, press the Detect Mode button to switch from Field 1 to Field 2. Field 2 uses a higher weighting of multi-frequencies that reacts much faster, helping the detector see a good coin hidden right next to a rusty nail.
Turn on the Horseshoe Button (All Metal): Press the Horseshoe button on the control panel. This lets you hear the iron “grunts.” If you hit a target that gives a good high squeak but is surrounded by low iron grunts, it means a good target is masked by trash. Dig it!
Keep your sensitivity slightly lower than you would on flat pasture. Aim for 20 or 21.
If the sensitivity is too high, the detector will “falsely” beep every time the coil bumps a clod of dirt or passes over an air pocket.
Find a small patch of ground that doesn’t have any metal targets.
Press the Settings (Cog) button until the Ground Balance icon is selected.
Hold down the Accept/Reject button while continuously pumping the detector coil up and down (from 1 inch to 6 inches above the ground).
Do this until the audio stabilizes and the number on the screen stops changing.
What Target ID numbers are you seeing or hearing the most right now?
Are the iron nails giving you a clean high beep that tricks you into digging them, or are they just making a constant low chatter?
Are the iron nails giving you a clean high beep
If it’s a coin: The high beep will remain clean, sharp, and consistent from both directions.
If it’s a nail: The signal will usually break up, drop down into a low iron grunt, or the Target ID numbers will radically jump around.
Press the Horseshoe button to enter All Metal Mode.
Sweep the target again. If you hear a low iron “grunt” right before or right after that high beep, it is almost certainly a nail or an iron washer. A genuine deep coin won’t have that low iron grunt attached to it.
Press the Settings (Cog) button until you reach the Recovery Speed icon (looks like a clock/timer).
Press and hold the Settings button for two seconds. The screen will change to show FE.
Use the Plus (+) button to raise this number to 4 or 5.
Press the Cog button again to save and exit.
